Fleapit Cinema is an artist-run underground film exhibitor in Kjipuktuk, Mi’kma‘ki (Halifax, NS) showcasing alternative, creator-driven, and cutting-edge Canadian & Indigenous cinema.
Co-founded by Sean Maheux Galway and Brielle LeBlanc, Fleapit has been running since August 2023, when they organized a sold-out shorts program in Open Book Cafe. The following two short programs were screened at the Nimbus Publishing Warehouse before Fleapit began partnering with Carbon Arc Cinema.
Fleapit Cinema curates short film programs, feature screenings, and artist talks. They have hosted some of Canada’s most exciting filmmaking voices, including Ashley McKenzie, Matthew Rankin, Ben Petrie, Heather Young, Rhayne Vermette (virtual), Ethan Eng, Sook-Yin Lee, and Devin Shears, with each visiting filmmaker screening selling out Carbon Arc’s theatre of 70+ seats.
Fleapit Cinema currently has four dedicated and hardworking volunteer artists who program and manage the screenings:
-
Brielle LeBlanc
-
Cody Chandler
-
Kate Solar
-
A. Laurel Lawrence
- Sean M. Galway (currently on leave)
